If you are an aircraft or history enthusiast, then one place you might be interested in is the Museum of Aviation located in central Georgia. This magnificent museum is the largest aerospace museum in the southeastern part of the United States and is created on approximately 51 acres of property. It is located on the outskirts on Warner Robins, Georgia and it is in close proximity to Robins Air Force Base.
The Museum of Aviation originally opened in 1984 and housed about 40 different aircraft at the time. Today, the museum is home to about 90 distinctive aircraft, as well as detailed exhibits on Prisoners of War (POW’s) and Tuskegee airmen, just to name a couple.
On the property, visitors have the chance to explore exhibits throughout four main buildings where they can see various aircraft, missiles, and other interesting aeronautical artifacts. The Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame is also located in the museum.
One point of interest that you can view is the SR-71A Blackbird. This aircraft currently holds the award for reaching the fastest airspeed. The absolute speed record that it toots is 2,193.2 mph that occurred in July, 1976. Other points of interest include; cargo aircraft, helicopters, drones, bombers, fighter jets, and many more types of aircraft.
While at the museum, visitors can explore by a self-guided tour or on a guided tour. There are also specially organized touring programs that can be arranged prior to your visit. The museum is available for the public throughout the year, but is closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas holidays.
