Located at the address of 99-Armed Forces Boulevard in Warner Robins, Georgia, is a unique landmark that is rich in history and interesting character. This landmark is known as “Depot Row”. On this site, visitors will find the E.L. Greenway Welcome Center and the X556 Caboose. Both of these attractions welcome local residents and visitors of the city throughout the year.
In 2008, this interesting site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The one-story brick building, which houses the E.L. Greenway Welcome center currently, was built in the early 1940’s. It was originally designed as a passenger depot and a freight station. This location was the second spot for the Warner Robins’ train station.
The first station was a wooden structure that had to be relocated due to the development of the Robins Air Force Base. The creation of the second train station occurred towards the end of World War II, when the city began to grow and succeed once again.
The X556 Caboose that sits adjacent to the building was built in 1971 by Southern Railway. In 2000, it was donated to the city of Warner Robins and placed next to the depot building. This particular type of caboose is also known as a “Bay Window” caboose. Each side of the railroad car has a big bay window that allows for clear viewing from either side.
Train and railroad enthusiasts will be interested in the creation of the old caboose and the train depot. Some visitors will feel like they are going back in time, as they notice original fixtures, paint colors, pictures, and hardware from years gone by.
